Westminster Students Page

2008-09 Academic Year

Hello, and welcome to the Westminster Students page! Here you'll find all sorts of useful information that will help us have a wonderful year of music.

I'm teaching at Westminster for my sixth year, teaching alongside Beth Guerriero and Aimee Morrill. Chika Mimura, a former student of Dr. Suzuki, has been with us for three years, and is currently on a leave of absence. Chika will probably re-join us later on this year. We all teach private lessons to our own students, and group classes are shared. Group class teachers will rotate after every concert so that everyone gets to see everyone during the course of the year.

Students in the Westminster Suzuki program can start from a very early age, or from a later age. Adult beginners are okay! Students are encouraged to progress at their own learning pace without comparison to that of other students. All students are taught to learn the violin in a manner that approximates as closely as possible the way we learn our native language (see the section on the Suzuki Method), which includes private lessons, group classes, and consistent home practice.

This year, we will continue our new approach to concert participation. There will be three concerts throughout the year, and one big fun event at the end. (I have heard a rumor that this last concert may include pizza.) The smaller concerts will include group performances, which everyone will participate in, and some solo performances, which some people will participate in. Everyone will do at least one solo performance this year, but you don't have to do one each time.

Westminster Conservatory is a division of Westminster Choir College, which is a branch of Rider University. Westminster Choir College is located in Princeton, NJ, where they conduct all sorts of important research about future scientific developments and about the distant past, such as Greek literature and empty parking spaces.

Parents, please allow lots of time to park. You may very likely need to park out on the street, or on another street, or another one. The lot by the Library and Cottage buildings (C lot) is now off limits even to faculty, who have to apply for a special pass to park there if our classes are located in those particular buildings. Don't tempt fate, because they will ticket you. The curb across from the high school is sometimes your best bet.

If anyone is curious, the lowest-level parking ticket costs $33.
