A Violin Owner's Manual |

Your violin is a tool for creating beautiful music, and it's fun to play; best of all, your violin is a buddy. You see it every day, and you know it as well as you know your friends. And your violin is different from every other violin in the world! It looks slightly different, feels slightly different, and plays in a different way than anyone else's. Some violins sound silky smooth, some are strong, some are bright and brilliant, some are dark and rich. As you continue to practice on your violin, you will learn how to use the things that make it unique. And because your violin is so special, you have to take care of it! Store it in a safe place in your house, never let it get too hot or too cold, and never do anything that might hurt it. (The bow is not a sword...) There are places you can go in your local area to get a great-sounding violin, and you must make sure that you get it from someone you trust. The person who sells you your violin is someone you should have a comfortable professional relationship with, as you come back for small repairs or adjustments. Please keep me informed and involved in the process of choosing an instrument, because I can give you valuable advice. Most of all, to help care for your violin, use your imagination. The best violin owner treats the violin like it's a person. If you treat your violin as if it needs attention, needs to be fed, and needs to be kept safe, it will continue to sound great for years and years.

Owning a violin is a serious decision, not unlike the decision to own a pet. You must take care of your violin every day. This doesn't just mean playing on it, although regular playing will help its sound stay open and free; violins need a certain amount of maintenance to stay in good condition. |
Where you go to get a violin is also very important. Above all else, I recommend getting the highest quality instrument you can find. But, make sure that you get your instrument from someone that you trust, and that you get an instrument whose sound you will love to hear every day. |
